I rattle this around in my mind all the time. As an American that was born in 1965, I was raised with core values which included truth and honesty. I look around today and observe a world where these two personal characters have disappeared for so many.
How did this happen?
I don’t really have a solid answer but I have a few ideas.
First, I think the relentless pursuit of success and accumulation of material things at nearly all cost has created a world where people don’t give a damn about the steps or process to get there and the only thing that matters is the final outcome. I know, I have seen it through my own actions and upon reaching that desired end result, found it to be empty and void of the pleasure I sought.
Second, I think our socielty has arrived to this void because things have come so easy to us in this affluent country that subsequently we have a throw away society. People throw away nearly everything at the drop of a hat. From useful items to relationships. Because we quickly throw so much out, so many people have a who gives a damn, I will get the next one attitude”.
Third, America has a culture where accountability has been abandoned. I go batshit crazy trying to wrap my head around so many instances where people are not held accountable. Examples of this are The Clinton Crime Family, the Aurora police officer who was passed out drunk behind the wheel of his police car with a loaded weapon and had a blood alcohol level 5 times the legal limit and does not face DUI charges and keeps his job. I could go on for hours siting examples where accountability is just not applied. It’s sickening.
